Community Organizing to Reach Empowerment (CORE) Center - A collaborative partnership to increase teaching and learning, outreach, research, and service opportunities.
Marilyn Thayer, M.Ed., Project Director
Immersed in the Fort Collins area with the highest concentration of poverty, the Center provides educational programs to the residents, who continue to face challenges precipitated by socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic differences. The vision for the Center is to create opportunities for residents to build on their strengths and develop their capacity for addressing the issues that affect their quality of life. The primary goals of the project are to: (1) improve and stabilize the physical living conditions; (2) increase the level of safety in the neighborhoods and well-being of families; and (3) increase educational and economic opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency.
Centrally located in the north Fort Collins community, the Center engages residents and develops partnerships with businesses and other human services organizations from the area (community-based). It also offers coordinated and integrated programs, activities, services, and research opportunities that are based on identified needs and interests of the community members it serves (community-focused). In addition, to ensure the active involvement of the community residents, the members from the target neighborhoods are hired for various positions for the CORE staff (community-directed).
